Woodward OM and Perlow SM (1983), "Balance Quality Measurements on Baluns", IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques., Oct, 1983. Vol. 31(10), pp. 821-824.
Abstract: Two different methods of measuring the balance quality of baluns are described. Section I describes the balance comparator, a mechanical test device requiring only a signal source, and receiver to perform the measurements on the test balun. Section II describes the use of a network analyzer, computer controlled to plot out all the graphical data on the balun measurements. Measurements on a balun having known balance characteristics show both methods obtain satisfactory balance data.

Allen CW and Krauss HL (1977), "Wide-band rotary transformer—Unbalanced current analysis", Proceedings of the IEEE., Feb, 1977. Vol. 65(2), pp. 200-206.
Abstract: Performance of a wide-band rotary transformer with approximately 1000:1 bandwidth (80 kHz-80 MHz) is described. A previous paper [1] gave theoretical analysis and experimental results based upon lossless balanced, transmission line theory. This paper extends the results to the case of a shielded transformer, and uses a combination of balanced and unbalanced line theory to account for losses and predict frequency response. Theoretical results are confirmed by data measured on a prototype coupler.

Bockelman DE and Eisenstadt WR (1995), "Combined differential and common-mode scattering parameters: theory and simulation", IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques., July, 1995. Vol. 43(7), pp. 1530-1539.
Abstract: A theory for combined differential and common-mode normalized power waves is developed in terms of even and odd mode impedances and propagation constants for a microwave coupled line system. These are related to even and odd-mode terminal currents and voltages. Generalized s-parameters of a two-port are developed for waves propagating in several coupled modes. The two-port s-parameters form a 4-by-4 matrix containing differential-mode, common-mode, and cross-mode s-parameters. A special case of the theory allows the use of uncoupled transmission lines to measure the coupled-mode waves. Simulations verify the concept of these mixed-mode s-parameters, and demonstrate conversion from mode to mode for asymmetric microwave structures.<>

Roberts WK (1957), "A New Wide-Band Balun", Proceedings of the IRE., Dec, 1957. Vol. 45(12), pp. 1628-1631.
Abstract: This paper describes a form of balun which is useful for matching a balanced circuit to an unbalanced circuit of nearly the same impedance over a wide frequency range. The bandwidth increase is obtained by the use of a quarter-wave transmission line section which is placed inside one of the balanced arms, thereby minimizing the over-all physical length. It is shown that a practical balun of this type, designed to match a 50-ohm unbalanced line to a balanced 70-ohm antenna, has a voltage standing-wave ratio of 1.4 or better over a frequency band of about 2.8 to 1. The wide bandwidth, simplicity, and reasonable physical dimensions make the balun particularly useful in connection with the adjustable-length dipole antennas which are generally used for vhf and uhf fieldstrength measurement.

Ruthroff CL (1959), "Some Broad-Band Transformers", Proceedings of the IRE., Aug, 1959. Vol. 47(8), pp. 1337-1342.
Abstract: Several transmission line transformers are described which have bandwidth ratios as high as 20,000:1 in the frequency range of a few tens of kilocycles to over a thousand megacycles. Experimental data are presented on both transformers and hybrid circuits. Typical applications are: interstage transformers for broad-band amplifiers; baluns for driving balanced antennas and broad-band oscilloscopes; and hybrids for use in pulse reflectometers, balanced modulators, etc. These transformers can be made quite small. Excellent transformers have been made using ferrite toroids having an outside diameter of 0.080 inch.
