Information on the County of Sachsen-Anhalt
Sachsen-Anhalt is situated in the heart of Germany. About 2.8 million humans live in this county of the Federal Republic of Germany covering approximately 20600 km². The landscape is coined by the rivers Elbe (303 km in Schsen-Anhalt) and Saale, which flow through the county from south to north, as well as by the Harz low-range mountains from which one half is situated in the western part of Sachsen-Anhalt. The Brocken peak is well known to many radio amateurs, it is not only the highest mountain in the Harz mountains and thus in Sachsen-Anhalt as with its 1142 m, but also an excellent location for the UKW relays and digipeaters for the digital radio data transmission (packed radio) in the amateur radio increasing possible distances because of its high situation. The Brocken peak accommodates a relay for amateur radio television, too. The two largest cities are Halle at the Saale and the county capital of Magdeburg at the Elbe.
The DARC’s district of Sachsen-Anhalt is almost identical to the county of the Federal Republic of the same name except the area around Jessen belonging to the DARC’s district of Brandenburg. The DARC’s district of Sachsen-Anhalt covers 37 local branches in which over 800 members are organized.
